Overview

Carolina Sarria is a Colombian-born counterculture menswear designer whose work challenges tradition through wearable collage art — fusing punk-glam aesthetics with social commentary and gender-bending high fashion. Her label has earned a two-and-a-half-year licensing partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Vogue Italia recognition, and collections sold at Dover Street Market in London. I produced both photography and video content for her 2020 collection.

The Challenge

Sarria's design philosophy is built on contradiction — punk meets glamour, tradition meets subversion, raw meets refined. The visual documentation of her work needed to carry that same tension rather than flattening it into standard fashion coverage. A conventional lookbook approach would have undersold the counterculture identity at the core of the brand.

My Role

Videographer & Photographer — capturing a mix of formats across the project, including lookbook-style stills, movement-based video, and behind-the-scenes documentation, all shot in a cinematic, moody style that matched the collection's tone rather than a clean commercial fashion aesthetic.

Design System

Lighting and composition leaned into shadow, texture, and contrast to reflect the punk-glam identity of the collection — favoring mood and atmosphere over flat, even lighting typical of standard fashion photography. The visual language stayed consistent across both the photography and video deliverables so the full body of work read as one cohesive story.

Motion & Animation

Video content emphasized deliberate, controlled movement — camera work that let garments and textures breathe on screen rather than relying on fast cuts, allowing the collage-like construction of each piece to be seen clearly in motion.

Prototype & Handoff

Content was captured and edited independently, then delivered as a finished set of photography and video assets for Sarria's brand use across her platforms and press materials.

Outcome

A complete visual documentation of Sarria's 2020 collection — photography and video that captured the intersection of art, craft, and counterculture central to her design identity, for a designer with international recognition including Vogue Italia and Dover Street Market placement.

Reflection

Shooting for Carolina Sarria reinforced that fashion documentation works best when it respects the designer's point of view rather than imposing a generic visual template. The cinematic, moody approach was a deliberate choice to honor the punk-glam tension at the heart of her work rather than smoothing it over.
